Hello Nerds!
Welcome back to N・O・T・E・S, the part of the week where I ramble about books, ideas, and everything in between.
Some books just don’t let go — they haunt you long after the last page. Welcome to my roundup of those stubborn stories that refuse to leave my brain. Grab a drink, let’s get spooky (in a good way).
Nonsense
The random corner of my brain where ideas and grocery lists mingle
Random facts or book trivia that lingered long after closing the cover
Have you ever had those random facts or quirky book trivia that sneak into your brain and refuse to leave? (even when you’ve shut the cover and moved on) Yes, like that one weird detail about a character’s obsession with pickles or an unexpected historical tidbit that suddenly makes you see the whole story in a new light. These little nuggets haunt me, popping up at the oddest moments just to remind me how fascinating (and sometimes downright strange) a good book can be.
So here’s one about the book Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. Rebecca was originally written in longhand on a series of hotel stationery pads during a stay in Cornwall. Daphne was so secretive about the story that she never showed it to anyone until the manuscript was finished. Sounds a bit like a few characters that are sneaking around and not telling anyone their thoughts!

That Eerie feeling….
My hot take on “haunted” — it’s not just creepy ghosts banging around in old houses.
Sure, I love a good spooky spirit as much as the next person (who doesn’t enjoy a phantom cameo now and then?), but the kind of haunting I’m really talking about is way sneakier. It’s those books that haunt your brain like an unwanted song you can’t get out of your head.
These are the stories that show up uninvited in your thoughts when you’re trying to concentrate, take a shower, or, God forbid, fall asleep. They’re not rattling chains; they’re emotional ninja ghosts—sneaking in with all the feels: heartbreak, regret, confusion, and sometimes just plain existential dread.
So yeah, haunted can mean literal ghosts, but more often it means that one book that messes with your head in the best possible way. The one that makes you pause, ponder, and occasionally mutter to yourself, “Why am I still thinking about this??”
5 Reasons Why Haunted Books Stick With Us
They touch on fears we don’t talk about.
The characters feel like they live rent-free in our minds.
Their endings leave us wondering what if? forever.
They reveal uncomfortable truths we hide from ourselves.
Because sometimes, the best stories haunt you long after the last page.

Tangents:
Where my brain wanders without asking permission
There’s this hilarious—and slightly embarrassing—connection between the books that haunt me and my borderline unhealthy obsession with binge-watching ghost shows. It’s like once a book gets under my skin, I can’t help but dive headfirst into every spooky documentary, creepy podcast, or supernatural drama I can find. I swear, my “haunted book” brain automatically switches to “ghost detective mode,” hunting for real-life mysteries and eerie stories to keep the vibe alive.
Sometimes I catch myself making weird comparisons, too. Like, “This character’s paranoia? Total Paranormal Activity vibes.” Or “That plot twist? Straight out of a True Crime episode.” And don’t even get me started on how certain haunting books have their own soundtrack in my head—think moody indie tunes or suspenseful scores that would give any horror movie a run for its money.
It’s like my love for haunted stories doesn’t stop at the page—it spills over into movies, music, and random late-night Google binges. So yeah, haunted books don’t just linger in my thoughts—they hijack my entire entertainment life. And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.

Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms
One of the weirdest things about haunted books is how they don’t just stick in your head—they sneak in and reveal parts of yourself you didn’t even know existed. Like, “Oh, I have that feeling buried way down here? Cool, thanks for the reminder, book.” Sometimes it’s a long-lost fear, a forgotten regret, or just plain old emotional baggage you thought you’d packed away neatly. Spoiler alert: you didn’t.
These books don’t hand you a neat little bow of answers—they make you sit with the messy, awkward parts of being human. It’s like they hold up a funhouse mirror to your soul: distorted, confusing, but strangely revealing. And just when you think you’re done digging, bam!—another unexpected truth pops out, waving like, “Surprise! Didn’t see me coming, did you?”
So yeah, haunted books can be uncomfortable, but they’re also the ultimate self-discovery tool. Who knew that getting emotionally haunted was the literary version of a surprise therapy session? Next time a book won’t leave your brain, just remember—it might be your own hidden parts trying to get your attention. And honestly, maybe that’s exactly what you needed.
